May of been mentioned already, but 'hi' instead of 'hello' seems to be generally accepted these days. The first time I ever heard anyone say 'hi' was back in the 70s watching the Brady Bunch, it was still an exotic word back then. I also remember a lot of people saying 'wotcha!' back then too, never hear anyone say that nowadays.

Perhaps.
Appreciating proper language is like appreciating a bricklayer who uses tried and tested principles to build a solid wall rather than a bodged one that is identifiable as a wall and sort of does the job, but has shaky foundations. Most of the time it doesn't matter, but sometimes it really does. Communicating with precision is a skill like many others. But yeah, sometimes just getting the message across is good enough.

I got pissed off when Duolingo said my translation of "Мама дома", "Mum's home" was wrong because I "should" have written "Mom", but I think jb's a tad OTT there

There was a young girl's mother got murdered, which was all tragic enough. On the news there was a close up of a card she left for her, which had the word "Mom" written on it, All my sympathy went out of the window at that point..
There is a whole army of cunts out there who wallow in worst aspects of American culture. Now we have school proms, baby showers and people celebrating thanksgiving. I fucking despair sometimes.

I don't know. The GAMMON ARMY seemed to have noticed it about four years ago and complaints about the phrase have been semi constant since that time. I've never heard anyone say it except to complain about people saying it.
